GL and GX trim Datsun 1200s used illuminated electrical switch knobs. For the 1972 US market, the electrical switch knobs were redesigned to use words instead of symbols. Then in 1973 all USA 1200s adopted the illuminated knobs.

- identification of essential controls and displays must be illuminated whenever the headlamps are lit (Except for foot-operated controls or manually operated controls mounted on the steering column)
