Aftermarket Pads
Aftermarket is parts you buy from the parts store, as opposed to sold by the car manufacturer. They can vary from the original manufacturer's specifications in these areas:
- Friction material (asbestos, organic, semi-metallic, ceramic, etc.)
- Friction formula (high-temp, high-friction, low-dust, etc)
- Method of fastening pad to backing plate (rivits, expoxy, etc.)
- Anti-squeal features like a rubberized backing
- Replacement-warning tabs
- Pad surface area^
^Aftermarket pads tend to suppport many models, so have the largest pad. For example B110 and B310 use the same Type D41, but the B110 pad is spec'd at a smaller friction pad, while B310 uses a larger pad. Both will bolt on the other.
