Clutch problems do not necessarily mean you need a new clutch. Adjusting the clutch might resolve the problem. Or other more obscure issues might be the cause.

Contents

Noise when pedal pressed

Noise when pedal released

  • Worn Gearbox Bearing (Input Shaft Bearing)

Clutch Won't Release Fully

Difficult to shift gears due to failure to fully release

  • improper adjustment of linkage. Adjust the clutch to see if that fixes the issue.
  • incorrect length of Release Bearing sleeve fitted. If you just swapped gearboxes, this is a somewhat common issue

Grabby clutch

  • Drum shoe brakes too tight, or contaminated with oil or grease. Inspect Rear Brakes and (if so equipped) Brakes#Front Drum Brakes
  • Oil or grease on clutch face
  • Disc rivets loose
  • Poorly lubricated clutch disc splines
  • warped pressure plate
  • Misaligned clutch. Make sure there is no junk between gearbox
  • worn clutch cable (common with RHD clutches)
  • Worn lining. Replace disc

Clutch Slips

  • improper adjustment of linkage (no free play). Adjust the clutch to see if that fixes the issue.
