The engine number is stamped on the engine block itself. It positively identifies the engine size (e.g. A12) as well as the serial number. The mark is always on the left (distributor) side of a Datsun A-series engine, but the location varies with the year. If you do not see the number, wipe the grease off the engine block.

Stamp is below #4 spark plug, aft of distributor
Late A14 Engine and A15 Engine ID Mark location
Late Tall-Block
Stamp is below #2 & #3 spark plugs, center of block, above fuel pump, forward of distributor
Matching Numbers
If the engine is the original one, the serial number will match that on the Model Number Plate.
