Japan Electrical Control Systems formed 1973 as a joint venture of Nissan and Bosch.

Injector Sizing

Say the injectors are rated at 3bar (43.5 psi) +-3%. 80% is the normal maximum practical operating capacity. You can get more output by boosting fuel pressure, for example some injectors might be safe at 70lbs pressure.

You need to know the BSFC (Brake Specific Fuel Consumption). For a normally aspirated engine, plan on 0.5 lbs/hour/hp. Put another way, take the HP/2

200 HP / 2 = 100 lbs/hr is the need.

With 4 injectors, they need to be 25 lbs/hr allowing for 80% operation, you should get 30 lbs/hr rated injectors. If you are planning on raising power output later, go up one size to start with.

High or Low Resistance Injectors?

Whether you use High or Low Resistance Injectors depends first on whether your ECS can do both. Get the kind that is compatible.

  • Most OEM controllers use high-resistance injectors (saturated driver). injector temperature lower makes it more reliable, which is why the high-impedance design is the most common type from the factory.
  • Many aftermarket controllers use low-resistance injectors (peak and hold), which can cycle faster but run hotter

Low impedance injectors with a resistance of 0.5-6 ohms, and high impedance injectors of 6 to 12 ohms

Low Impedance: less than 6 ohms
High impedance:  6-12 ohms

You can run low impedence injectors with OEM ECUs by using a dropping resistor.

Compare to Fuel Injectors: High vs. Low Impedance by Hot Rod magazine.

Feed Type

Older Nissan EFI systems use a "hose-feed" style of top-feed injector, where the inlet hose is semi-permanently fixed to the injector.

SR:   side-feed injectors (most)
SR:   top-feed injectors (some)
CA:   top-feed injectors, low impedance
RB20: top-feed injectors, low impedance
RB25: side-feed injectors

Top-feed means the petrol comes into the top of the injectors, and is sprayed out the bottom. In a side-feed design, fuel enter the side of the injectors and is still sprayed out the bottom. Top-feed allows a simple fuel rail which snaps over the injectors, while side-feed requires a more complex gallery-type fuel rail.

injector_type.jpg

There is no real advantage to side-feed or top-feed, except in manufacturing methods and packaging considerations. Performance-wise, it is more important how much fuel a particular injector flows. To switch from one type to another means changing the entire fuel rail.

11mm vs 14mm

Top-feed injectors use either 11mm vs 14mm inlet O-Ring diameter. Which size you need depends on the size of the openings in the fuel rail.

O-Ring size at Fuel Rail
* 11mm inlet size
* 14mm inlet size

Japan injectors can be either size feed. Likewise, Bosch injectors can be either 11mm or 14mm. There is no performance difference between the two, instead check the fuel-flow rating of the injectors. Switching from one size to the other requires changing the fuel rail, but if you find a bargain set of injectors it may be worth the trouble of switching.

Hi-flo injectors are available in 11 or 14 mm inlet versions, for example you can get 1000cc injectors with 11mm inlets.

Impedance

High-flow injectors are available in low-impedance or high-impedance designs.

Low Impedance: Below 4 ohms
High Impedance: Above 8 ohms

Modern injector designs mean there is no performance advantage to either type. With 1970s-1980s injector designs, the low-impedance injectors had a faster reaction time which enabled better low-speed running.

ECUs that use Saturation signal require an external dropping resistor when used with low-impedance injectors. This includes most factory ECUs. Most aftermarket ECUs can use either high- or low-impedance injectors.
