L, Z, KA and SR all use the same crossmember mount points. For swapping any of these engines into a 1200, you can use the stock B110 L-series crossmember or an A-series crossmember suitably modified. Or, use the unmodified A-series crossmember with custom engine-side brackets. L, Z, KA and SR all use the same crossmember mount points.  += Overview =
 +The L,CA, KA and SR engines use different rubber isolators, but use the same basic crossmember layout. By mixing and matching the isolators and/or using spacers, a single universal style crossmember can be used.

Current revision

L, Z, KA and SR all use the same crossmember mount points. For swapping any of these engines into a 1200, you can use the stock B110 L-series crossmember or an A-series crossmember suitably modified. Or, use the unmodified A-series crossmember with custom engine-side brackets.

Contents

Overview

The L,CA, KA and SR engines use different rubber isolators, but use the same basic crossmember layout. By mixing and matching the isolators and/or using spacers, a single universal style crossmember can be used.

Oil Sump

Which crossmember you use determines which oil pan you should fit to the donor engine (or vice-versa). With Datsun 1200 crossmember which is front-sump design, it is best to use a front-sump pan (e.g. 200B) with the donor engine. If you use the lowest-profile sump (e.g. Vanette winged sump) it will fit the 1200 crossmember without needing notching of the pan or the crossmember.

For more details on oil pans, see the individual engine swap articles:

L-series Engine Swap
Z-series Engine Swap
KA Engine Swap
SR engine swap

L and Z use the same oil pans, so swaps to the factory winged sump are easy.

Stock

A-series Crossmember

Some guys modify the stock crossmember. But you don't have to modify the 1200 crossmember -- you can create new engine-side mount brackets which line up with the stock 1200/B210/B310 crossmember and isolator rubbers.

Use a front-sump oil pan with a 1200, 120Y or B310 crossmember. Use a mid-sump pan with a USA B210 crossmember.

KA Engine
Datsun B310 engine brackets bolt to KA engine. The bolts attaching the brackets to the engine are larger than A-series, so drill out the holes to match. The brackets are bolted in the back two block holes from where 240SX mount bolts up.

Z-series custom adjustable mount, might work for L/SR/KA too
photo-11.jpg

Z-series Method 2
You can use the stock 1200 crossmember and fit low-profile rubber mounts to it. Then drill simple angle iron to bolt to the engine to match up to the rubber mounts.

PB110 Crossmember

Factory crossmember from L14-powered B110 works with a mid-sump pan. Because it is a very rare crossmember it is rarely seen in swaps.

This crossmember dips very low and comes slightly forward (stock 1200 crossmember is notched slightly to the rear).

Modified Crossmember

Cut off the stock 1200 crossmember uprights (horns), then weld flat plates at an engle to it. Drill a hole in each plate and slot them for bolting in the engine mount isolators (rubbers).

You can modify the 1200 crossmember: Have the mounts trimmed to an angle simular to that of a 200B, then cut the 200B mounts in 1/2 to finish the job and locate the motor lower and improve the mounting angles. A 910 Bluebird L20B sump fits almost perfect, reshape it with a hammer a little just so it will clear the 1200 crossmember, maybe 1/2cm.

If using other sumps, you may need to do the following:
* Remove notch from Datsun 1200 xmember
* Reshape sump to clear the Drag Link (cross rod)

Modified curve rearward for engine setback

High-profile horns to raise engine and notched/sectioned for more clearance. This is done to fit common pans (if you can't find the right pan). L20B will hit the bonnet with this mod.

L-series Horns

Stock 1200 crossmember with the horns (uprights) removed and A10 L-series horns fitted. The A10 (Stanza/510) horns fit right on. Use a drill for spotwelds and a grinder to remove the horns.

Swapping Crossmembers

Only crossmembers from 1200s bolt into 1200s: either the original-style 1200 one (1970-1973) or the late-style 1200 one (1974-2007). Both are designed for A-series engines.

NOTE: These do not fit a 1200:
* A10 (Stanza/510) crossmember
* B210 (Sunny/120Y) crossmember
* B310 (210/Sunny/120Y/140Y/150Y)
* 510/610/710 crossmember

B210: Use a Datsun 510 crossmember, which is a direct bolt-up. See B210 section

B310: See B310 section

Maddat Crossmember

Maddat sells a 1200 crossmembers. Slot the holes toward the center of the crossmember, as the Maddat has the holes a little forward to fit the CA. Use a front-sump pan from a Stanza.

B210, B310

B310

For front-sump oil pans.

Datsun B310 (210/Sunny) can use the crossmember from the Datsun A10 (Stanza/510). It is the same dimensions to bolt to the B310 chassis, but has horns (uprights) for L-series engine. Details? Please share.

Use an S110 Silvia/Gazelle crossmember 1980-1983. Bolts right up to the B310. Originally designed for Z-series engine, and KA lines up to it as well.

26246.jpgAlbum 26246

B210

Use a Datsun 510 crossmember, which is a direct bolt-up and matches the USA HB210 control arms. For 120Y, swap in 510 control arms and 2" struts. Works with mid-sump engines. For front-sump, use a 510 reversed crossmember.

For front-sump pans, A10 Stanza horns welded to 120Y crossmember, works with use 200B, 910 Bluebird or Stanza sump. Locates the engine about 30mm further back than if you use the 610/180B crossmember
15671.jpgAlbum 15671

B210 can use a 510/610/710 crossmember. Some report fouling with the Tension Rods on some year/model B210, but a little grinding/cutting will solve that. For a 1977 USA B210, the 510 crossmember bolts in with no modification.

510 crossmember differences:
* Wider LCA pivot points
* mid-sump design
* L-series mounts

510 crossmember has the LCA pickup points 1" further apart (making the track 1/2" wider per side), compared to USA B210. B210 LCAs are 1/2" causing bump steer to change. So weld up and redrill the holes to keep the original steering geometry.

Motor Mount Insulators

The rubber Insulators (isolators) you use depends on which crossmember you use. For an L-series type crossmember the following are usually fitted.

To put a KA/SR in a 510 you run 620 L-series insulators, which are taller than 510 ones. Left and Right are slightly different, so some run two left side isolators, others use Left and Right as Datsun intended. 620 motor mounts are 2 mm taller than 510 motor mounts.

Although most SR/KA swappers use 510/620 style insulators because they are lower profile, SR20 and KA24E/KA24DE use this style rubber isolator as stock. Buy at RockAuto.com (Anchor 8296 for S13.KA24 engine):
