All Datsun 1200s were fitted with a 4-speed floor shift manual transmission (FS4W56). However, in most markets some Standard models had a 3-speed column shift (R3W56). This transmission had a higher 1st gear (3.380:1) than the 4-speed (3.757:1), meaning takeoff was a bit slower than the 4-speed, and starting on steep hils a bit more difficult. The 4-speed is a direct bolt-in replacement for the 3-speed.
