710 was the first generation (1973-1977) of the Nissan Violet. Available in Sedan and Hardtop models, both of which had fastback styling (the difference is the door frames — sedans have frames around the door windows, while hardtops have no frames around the door glass). The 710 Hardtop has up-sweeping rear side glass, while 2-door sedan had down-sweeping rear side glass.

Overview
Nissan Violetᵂ was the C-classᵂ (compact) model family for the Nissan Cherry sales organization. The corporate rationale was to have something similar in class and cost to the Bluebird 510, because the Bluebird 610 was going upmarket. Thus, it would slot below the cost of the 610 with IRS, but above the Sunny Excellent. It was similar to the compact Datsun 510 with same running gear & chassis/suspension (while the 710 did not use IRS in most of its models, it was used in the SSS. Other grades used the 510 straight axle). This also consolidated the export market which had relied on low-cost non-IRS 510 models in some countries e.g. Mexico. 710 was similar to 610 but used different body panels and interior and shorter wheelbase. 710 was larger than 510, but 610 was even bigger.
* Sold by Nissan Cherry Store as a larger companion model to the Sunny * L-engine powered * Same size as Datsun 610 Bluebird * SSS models came with IRS
1973-1977 Nissan model series 710 was marketed as:
- Nissan Violet (Japan)
- Datsun 710 (USA & Canada)
- Datsun 140J/160J (Commonweath export countries)
- Datsun 160J (Mexico)
- nickname "bolilloᴳ" (dinner roll)
- Yue Loong Violet (Taiwan)

Violet and Bluebird
Violet was the C-class (compact) model family for the Nissan sales organization (later named Nissan Blue). It was a similar to the Bluebird 610, albeit looking very different, with unique body styles, sheet metal, and interior but same running gear & chassis/suspension. 710 did not use IRS in most of its models, to slot below the cost of the 610 with IRS. Further reducing costs it was closer in size to the 510, with shorter wheelbase than the 610. Bluebird moved upscale into the luxury sedan market with the 610 and 810, including availability of long-wheelbase six-cylinder models, while Violet 710 and A10 continued as the lesser compact sedan.
Nissan Violet versus Datsun Bluebird
While both 610 and 710 were compact sedans, both were larger than the 510. The 710 was closer to the 510, for example it was the same length as the 510, while 610 was almost 4 inches longer.

While the PB210 Sunny Excellent used the same running gear as the 510 (including engine/transmission and front suspension), it was a class size below. It was significantly shorter, lower and narrower than the 510 and also somewhat lighter in weight.
