-The 71 transmission is Nissan's strongest transmission. It was fitted to L-series six cylinders, FJ engines and more. 71 series comes in four different lengths, however a stumpy version is the same length as a Datsun 1200 transmission though obviously much larger around. The stronger 71B replaced the original 71A designs in the 1970s.+

 +The 71 transmission is Nissan's most common 5-speed transmission. It is used in a 1200 that has a larger engine swapped in. It was fitted to L-series six cylinders, SR, KA engines and more. 71 series comes in four different lengths, however a stumpy version is the same length as a Datsun 1200 transmission though obviously much larger around. The stronger 71B replaced the original 71A design of 1969. Finally the even stronger 71C came out in the mid-1980s.

-The 71-series has the mainshaft and countershaft 71 mm apart. This larger transmission is thus stronger than the 56-series used in the Datsun 1200, and stronger than the 63-series used in some A14-powered B210s. The C revision boxes (FS5W71C) was used with 3-liter V6 engines. +The 71-series has the mainshaft and countershaft 71 mm apart.  +No need to cut anything. If you get the right transmission it will fit into the unmodified tunnel. The typical way is to remove the front crossmember, jack up the car, then slide the assembled engine/transmission combination under the car, then lower the car down. Some choose to cut a wider opening into the 1200 firewall so that the engine/gearbox combo can be angled in from above.
 +
 +However if you use a long-tail Silvia S13/S14/S15 gearbox you'll have to cut an opening for the shifter further back. Obtain a Stumpy 71 to avoid this cutting.

-L-series and Z-series/KA-series use the same bell patttern -- BUT the L-series is a slant engine. So while the transmissions will physically bolt on, use the Z-/KA front case with the Z-series engines, and the L-series front case with the L-series engines. OR, you can bend the gearshift to the appropriate angle, but you risk transmission oil leaking out.+L-series and Z-series/KA-series use the same bell patttern -- BUT the L-series is a slant engine.  +* Most 71-series gearboxes will need a box section cut into the shifter area to clear the shifter area on the gearbox. To avoid this, obtain a Stumpy 71
 +
 +* Gearbox fits the 1200 tunnel width and opening. However it is a tight fit and the gearbox can't be removed or installed with the engine in place (see above). If you want easy installs, the tunnel may be replaced with a 1200 Automatic tunnel which is designed for 71 gearbox (or fit a tunnel from a 120Y, which is virtually identical). See main article: Tunnel
 +
 +== Crossmember ==
 +To fit the 71 you may need to fabricate (or get someone to fabricate) a new generic crossmember to attach the gearbox to the floor of your car.

Current revision

The 71 transmission is Nissan's most common 5-speed transmission.

Contents

Overview

The 71-series has the mainshaft and countershaft 71 mm apart. This larger transmission is thus stronger than the 56-series used in the Datsun 1200, and stronger than the 63-series used in some A14-powered B210s. The C revision boxes (FS5W71C) was used with 3-liter V6 engines, so you know it's strong.

th_ipodphotos212.jpg

Although the Nissan 90-Series Transmission was rated higher, experience shows that the 71C is practically just a as durable even behind a 300ZX turbo (see Gearbox Strength).

While never offered in an A-series version (it would be overkill even for a supercharged A-engine), the 71 is a good choice for larger Engine Swaps.

71 series is also the size of the Datsun 1200 Automatic Transmission (L3N71B), so a 1200 automatic Tunnel should fit them.

Long extension housing is the most common.

Stumpy

A stumpy is a gearbox that is 26.3" long overall. It fits in a Datsun 1200 perfectly with shifter in the correct location.

Use with A-series Engine

Although generally used with larger engine swaps such as L, KA, CA or SR, it can be modified to fit an A-series engine. Good for forced induction motors, or anywhere that A-series 5-speeds are no common.

Swap Notes

No need to cut anything.

However if you use a long-tail Silvia S13/S14/S15 gearbox you'll have to cut an opening for the shifter further back. Obtain a Stumpy 71 to avoid this cutting.

Long Tail -- shifter about 4" aft of original 1200 shifter

Interchange

Like transmission parts interchange:

* 71A bell housings swap (U20 bell or L-series bell)
* 71B 4-speed parts swap to other 71B 4-speeds
* 71 5-speed parts swap to other 71 5-speeds
* 71B/71C front cases can interchange after some mods

Complete transmission units of the same length interchange. For example, replacing a shorty FS5W71B with a shorty FW471.

L-series and Z-series/KA-series use the same bell patttern -- BUT the L-series is a slant engine. So while the transmissions will physically bolt on, use the Z-/KA front case with the Z-series engines, and the L-series front case with the L-series engines. OR, you can bend the gearshift to the appropriate angle, but you risk transmission oil leaking out as the gearbox will now be installed on a slant.

S13 Silvia/180SX Transmission

 • Most 71-series gearboxes will need a box section cut into the shifter area to clear the shifter area on the gearbox. To avoid this, obtain a Stumpy 71
 • Gearbox fits the 1200 tunnel width and opening.

Crossmember

To fit the 71 you may need to fabricate (or get someone to fabricate) a new generic crossmember to attach the gearbox to the floor of your car.

See Main Article: Wide gearbox crossmember
18458.jpg

Although see the next section for one that used a custom crossmember with the stock 1200 bolt points.
