For many parts you don't need a gasket, you can use just RTV for a leak-proof seal. But RTV is over easy to misuse, so follow the directions to the letter. Engine failure has resulted from improper RTV application.

Overview

Instead of a gasket, use RTV silicone sealer "gasket maker". Just be careful not to use too much and to follow the directions (e.g. let it partially set up before assembly)

CAUTION: Do not use on the oil pump

Nissan uses RTV, for example on KA oil pans. RTV works good if you are careful and use it thinly and evenly. But it is very easy to make a mess with it.

Do not use a gasket AND RTV.

Permatex have "Gear Oil RTV Sealant" Quote:
Because gear oil has friction modifiers that break down normal RTV and cause leaking, this specialty silicone has been tested to OEM specifications to ensure complete sealing.

They also have Ultra Black RTV Silicone which is designed for "differential covers".

Usage

Follow the directions to the letter on the package.

1. Remove all trace of prior gasket
2. Apply a thin but consistent amount of RTV
3. Let "set" to tack before mating the parts
4. bolt it on -- not too tight

RTV gasket should have very little squeeze out. You don't want that stuff inside the engine, but only on the sealing surfaces.
