Datsun 1200 cars (sedan/coupe/wagon) use an H145 differential in the Rear Axle Assembly. The B120 Datsun 1200 pickup uses the larger H165 diff.

H145 has 8-stud removable center. H150 and H165 also use 8 bolts. But only the H145 is 8-stud (the others use bolts).

NOTE: Aussie-built B110 sedans with a non-removable diff center use the BW60 diff.

There are some differences between flanges on H165's, some long (~217.5mm from carrier mounting face to driveshaft flange face), some short (~202.5mm). Depth of hole for centering boss varies also.

Axle code is on Chassis Identification plate 1980-on, in the engine compartment. Starting in mid-80s, Axle Code is on door-jamb sticker.

Factory LSD has a sticker on the back of the diff housing.

Counting

To verify the ratio in the vehicle matches the original equipment (or build tag), you may count turns of the wheel vs turns of the driveshaft. If slightly less than 4 turns of the driveshaft results in one turn of the wheels, it is a 3.9 ratio. If it takes a bit more than 4 turns, it is a 4.111 ratio.

Even better is to note the stamped numbers on the ring gear. For example, this unit is stamped 39:11

Differential Repair

Replacing diff bearings or spider gears? Or Ring & Pinion (CWP)? The procedure for re-assembly of the differential gear carrier is very complicated. Be sure to get the factory service manual.

We recommend: Just swap the whole center section "pumpkin" from a 1970-1973 B110 or 1974 B210 into the housing. It will be cheaper and certainly easier, someone has one for free. The center section rarely goes bad unless the diff runs low on oil, so your chances are very high of getting a good used one.

Yes, B110 and 1974 B210 center section is identical. You could also swap a 1975-1978 pumpkin, using a 2mm spacer between the pumpkin and the housing, or use three gaskets.

When buying a used center section, check the play in the pinion:

Backlash between ring gear and drive pinion
H145: 0.10 to 0.15 mm
R160: 0.1 to 0.2 mm
H165: 0.13 to 0.18 mm
H190: 0.15 to 0.20 mm

Gear Carrier

H145A features a cast iron gear carrier. The original H145 was the #Alloy Gear Carrier used by the B110 Datsun 1000.

Alloy Gear Carrier

The alloy carrier is weaker (less able to handle the torque) but is lighter so giving a superior ride over the normal cast iron carrier.

Using in H150 Housing

Say you have a race-prepped H145 diff center ... can you use it in the H150 housing of your B210 or B310? Yes. I imagine this procedure was created because of the success of the B110 in racing leading to a ready supply of TS-class racing parts.

  • mill the H150 housing flange to remove 2mm
  • use a B110 driveshaft, so that the length and flange matches


How to use the H145 type


If you process the mounting surface of the #H145 type carrier (38310-G0400) to the rear axle case as shown below, you can use the H145 type with the B310 standard rear axle case (for the H150 type).
